We’re a week away from St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, a time of hoisting green pints, merriment and friendship. But it’s also a time of giving as the Newfoundland Embassy and VOCM Cares “Pack the Pub.”
The annual event encourages people to drop by the pub located on Duckworth Street across from the Mary Brown’s Centre, and donate financially or materially to the Community Food Sharing Association.
Demand for food has risen sharply over the past several years.
Tina Bishop, general manager at the association, says donations of food are welcomed but so are monetary contributions. They recently had to buy $200,000 worth of food. The cost of purchasing product is there, and it’s real, and we have to do that,” says Bishop.
Their office and warehouse are currently in different locations but Bishop says they will have to have a larger facility soon. “We’re looking for partners, supporters, government agencies to come on board to help us do that and serve the province more efficiently,” says Bishop. “It would also allow us to offer more nutritious options which we cannot afford to do today.”
Donations are being accepted from now until end of day Sunday, March 15. VOCM will be broadcasting live from the event next Sunday from noon until 4:00.
