A little bit of everything is in the forecast for tomorrow as the island braces for quite the messy storm.
Everything from rain to heavy snow is on the way, but what you’ll get depends on the area in which you live.
Environment Canada meteorologist Graham MacDonald says the Avalon will escape the worst of this system. For the most part there will be some ice pellets and freezing drizzle, which will eventually change to drizzle tomorrow afternoon. The northwestern Avalon will get a small amount of snow overnight.
MacDonald describes a similar story for the south and southwest coasts. Areas more to the west could see 5 cm snow to start, but then many areas will see a transition to heavy rain. He says there is a rainfall warning out for the Burgeo and Port aux Basques areas, with totals in the 15 to 30 mm range.
There is a winter storm warning out for central, the west coast, and northern peninsula.
MacDonald says those areas will see around 15 to 25 cm, perhaps a little more over higher elevations. That will eventually transition to freezing rain and then drizzle as the temperatures warm up throughout the afternoon.
Lesser amounts are expected in the Gander to Bonavista areas, with 5 to 15 cm of snow before the transition to rain.
