Now that the immediate danger is over, the owners of a Portugal Cove restaurant destroyed by fire yesterday are left to ponder what’s next.
The blaze broke out at Landings Eatery and Pub at the ferry terminal in Portugal Cove-St. Phillips around 7:00 yesterday morning.
Strong winds blew heavy smoke through the community, forcing the temporary evacuation of a number of homes.
Mayor Dave Bartlett says the fire is a tremendous loss, not only for the owners, but for the entire town.
He says the busy restaurant was a family owned business and with the shock of yesterday’s events, he’s not sure whether they plan to rebuild.
Bartlett thanks the Portugal Cove-St. Phillips Fire Department, and firefighters from Torbay, Pouch Cove and St. John’s Regional for their help.
