Even though the heaviest weather is behind us, people in metro are still having problems getting their mail. Some haven’t had any for a few weeks, even though the mailbox sites have been cleared of snow blockages.
The Past President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in the metro region, Craig Dyer, says the snow has been a challenge, but the biggest reason for delays is staffing. He told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that Canada Post and its owners, the federal government, are the ones to blame.
“We went through a major reorganization in the metro region in October at the St. John’s depot. Prior to that, we had six people that would prepare the mail for St. John’s-Mount Pearl, and they reduced it by one,” says Dyer.
“They need to have the proper staff in the proper places.”
It will be another few months before results of the national vote on the latest contract offer are known.
