5 Wing Goose Bay is set to undergo upgrades thanks to Ottawa’s plans to enhance arctic defence and infrastructure.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced $35 billion in spending towards NORAD modernization during a visit to the Northwest Territories yesterday.
The plan is to upgrade military infrastructure in Yellowknife, Inuvik, Iqaluit and Goose Bay by constructing new airfields, hangars, fuel facilities and housing for personnel.
Carney says Ottawa’s plan will allow Canada to better defend its Arctic sovereignty.
With these upgrades, the PM says Canada will no longer rely on others to defend the Arctic. He says it will also allow for more economic opportunities in Canada’s north and improved standard of living for residents.
