The minister responsible for NL Housing says moving people from homes that are either too big or too small is among his plans to tackle a growing waitlist for NL Housing units.
The Auditor General released troubling numbers earlier this week on the growing waitlist of NL Housing units.
Minister Joedy Wall says the government has been converting many homes in the system as family sizes grow smaller and demand shifts to one- and two-bedroom units.
“We have units in our stock that were built in the 60s and at that time families were much larger. We have three, four bedroom homes. Unfortunately not every unit is able to be repaired or modified to a smaller unit,” he told reporters.
“What’s currently needed are one and two bedroom homes. Not all units that are four and five bedroom homes can be effectively or financially prudent to have them repaired. So we’re looking at all that.”
