The City of St. John’s is aware of a petition circulating calling on the city to do more to help those who must work in the wee hours in the downtown.
The petition was launched after musician Greg Tobin took to Facebook following the discovery of a “boot” on his car just as he wrapped up a long night entertaining St. Patrick’s Day crowds.
The city says the petition has not yet been formally submitted to council, but they are open to meeting with groups to better understand their concerns and explore potential solutions.
The city says suggestions like expanding loading and unloading zones, identifying short-term parking options and working with private operators all require collaboration with business and event organizers among others.
Boots are not applied by the city, but by the operators of private lots, and the municipal government does not regulate or oversee those practices.
