A woman with a property on the Conception Bay north shore is calling for bail reform after a man described by the RCMP as a “prolific offender” was arrested once again.
Thirty-four-year-old Justin King was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly forced his way inside a Victoria home, forcibly confined the homeowner and extorted them.
King is also facing five counts of failing to comply with a release order.
Therein lies the problem, according to Kristian Noonan, who owns a property in the area.
She says she attended a court hearing a few weeks ago in which Judge Andrew Wadden called the “jail not bail” and “catch and release” terms popularized by the federal Conservatives “inflammatory rhetoric.”
Noonan says that is not the case, and has some pointed words for judges, arguing that those who let repeat or prolific offenders out on bail carry a level of responsibility for what happens in the community.
Noonan says the federal government has made the justice system “way too soft,” and people are not being held accountable for their actions.
She wants to see laws changed to do just that.
Noonan says she shouldn’t have to outfit her home with expensive security systems just to feel safe. In fact, she argues that those systems do not work as deterrents because they had them in place at their home and people broke in anyway.
