The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association says a recent report shows that its members are continuing to meet operational demands despite limited resources, however the union says that can’t be at the expense of the well-being of officers.
The RNCA says it is increasingly feeling the effects of burnout, including resignations, occupational stress injuries and mental health challenges.
RNCA President Staff Sergeant Mike Summers says achieving staffing levels that align with national police-to-population ratios, as well as enhanced resources and a competitive collective agreement, will help address those concerns, and strengthen police services.
The RNCA says it welcomes growing public discussion around community safety. Addressing rising gun violence and other complex issues will require “meaningful collaboration” between the RNCA, RNC management and the provincial government.
