Eastern Newfoundland and the south coast will be drenched today as heavy rain makes it way through the area.
Environment Canada meteorologist Wanda Batten says there are rainfall warnings out for the Avalon, Burin Peninsula, and Connaigre areas.
She says the Avalon got about 10 mm overnight. Most of the region will get another 30 to 40 mm today, but the southern Avalon could see as much as another 50 mm and there is the possibility of thundershowers. The Burin Peninsula is in for another 30 mm of rain today after receiving about 25 mm last night.
Batten says the rain will taper off after supper, but the temperatures will plummet from about 8 degrees today to minus 8 overnight.
As Batten explains, western and central Newfoundland is in for a mixed bag of weather today.
She says temperatures are around zero degrees, meaning a snow and rain mix for most, though amounts won’t be too significant. The exception to that is the Northern Peninsula, where they could see 5 to 10 cm of snow.
Batten says some flurries are in store for the weekend, but temperatures will be cold.
As for next week, they are watching another system that could bring more snow with it. “So it doesn’t seem like we are out of the woods quite yet” says Batten.
