The Canadian Renewable Energy Association is urging Atlantic premiers to work toward greater regional energy collaboration in light of a new report released by the Atlantic Energy Collective.
According to the energy association, the report “makes clear that regional collaboration is no longer optional” and that Atlantic Canada’s clean energy potential is “enormous.”
The report identifies the various reliability, affordability and investment pressures when it comes to electricity demand, but that the region is acting “in parallel rather than through a coordinated regional approach.”
Among the issues identified in Newfoundland and Labrador is the lack of capacity for industrial growth, especially in the mining sector. It says pressures faced by the province include the need for new hydro development, the current review of the MOU with Hydro Quebec and the need to retire and replace the Thermal Generating Station in Holyrood.
