The FFAW has called off a protest planned for Confederation Building today after hearing yesterday from Premier Tony Wakeham.
The union had originally called the demonstration after seeking a meeting with government on snow crab negotiations, and its attempts to have crab removed from Final Offer Selection.
However, those plans were called off after the premier reached out. The panel hearing set for today has been delayed.
The details of that discussion have not yet been released publicly.
As of last evening, the union indicated that it is “proceeding with next steps.”
FFAW and ASP Blame Each Other For Challenges Ahead of Start of Fishery

Each of the two main players in the industry blames the other for difficulties leading up to the start of the crab fishery.
Lorelei Roberts, executive director of the Seafood Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, says they are the only ones at the table.
“The FFAW has not participated in the process as of yet. From our perspective, the objective is to have a successful snow crab season,” says Roberts.

Dwan Street, President of the FFAW, says that is not so.
Street says it was the ASP that walked away after her union offered to sit down with producers, bypass the panel for this year, and hammer out some true numbers.
“The ASP got up from the table, walked away, and showed a blatant unwillingness to even work together,” says Street.
