The provincial minister of immigration met recently with his federal counterpart to discuss ways in which Newfoundland and Labrador can see a greater share of newcomers accepted into Canada.
Last week federal Auditor General Karen Hogan highlighted cuts to new study permits which disproportionately affected Newfoundland and Labrador.
She indicated that while NL and Saskatchewan were expecting a 10 per cent increase in approved study permits in 2024, each province saw a drop of at least 59 per cent.
Immigration Minister Lin Paddock says he met with Minister Lena Diab earlier this month to discuss immigration, including the study permits highlighted by the AG.
He says the stats outlined by the AG were from 2024 and he’s now focused on ensuring that Newfoundland and Labrador sees greater benefits from immigration.
“The AG’s review will now serve as a benchmark for us, in lobbying to get more for our province.”
