5 Wing Goose Bay is on the receiving end of up to $8-billion in federal funding.
The announcement came today at CFB Goose Bay.
Government says it will make the money available for defence systems at the base.
When asked about what specifically the money would be used for, cabinet minister Joanne Thompson said details will follow.
“We know that we need to upgrade the facility. Speak with anyone connected to 5 Wing and they’ll tell you what needs to happen. Those details will follow and we will all hear in due course,” she told reporters. “But I think what’s really important to remember today is that the funds have been allocated and that is significant.”
A $187-million contract has also been awarded for modernization and heating upgrades at the facility.
MCW Custom Energy Solutions will modernize the central heating plant by replacing diesel systems with electric boilers, enhancing control systems and installing utility metering.
Government says it will also spend over $24-million in electrical and mechanical upgrades at 9 Wing Gander.
