A student and former radio host on CHMR believes MUNSU’s decision to cut funding to the station was made too quickly and without “meaningful consultation.”
MUNSU will no longer fund the station, citing its own financial concerns and what it says is low listenership.
Gabriela Nabakijje, who hosted Campus Connect on MUN Radio for two years, argues that the student survey conducted by the union was too general and may not reflect students’ opinions. She believes that if the station had one more year, it could have developed a survival plan.
“This felt more like a last-minute decision. I feel like they should have taken more time. If we got the year rather than just this semester,” she told VOCM News. “That point of they did a survey and some students who shared that they don’t really use the station, but that, have they asked the students who actually use the radio station?”
