There are more cod swimming around off the northeast coast, and industry hopes the new numbers parlay into an increase in the total allowable catch.
The growing cod stock took neither the FFAW, which represents harvesters and plant workers, nor industry by surprise. It’s what they have been seeing all along.
DFO attributes the healthy state of the stock to an increase in the capelin population – a forage fish.
Alberto Wareham, President of the Atlantic Groundfish Council and the CEO of Icewater Seafoods in Arnold’s Cove, is hoping that the minister increases the total allowable catch.
“The industry has been seeing higher numbers for years and now DFO is aligning so we’re hoping for an increase in the TAC for 2026/27,” says Wareham.
The management plan is expected to be released in about two months.
