The Salmonier Nature Park has a new permanent resident after officials went above and beyond to help a small creature in trouble.
A Newfoundland pine marten suffered a broken leg after being hit by a vehicle in Cormack on the west coast.
That’s when vets with the province’s Animal Health Division, staff from the Salmonier Nature Park and volunteers with the Topsail Road Veterinary Clinic jumped into action.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Waylon Wiseman performed surgery on the creature, shoring up the marten’s tiny, shattered leg with pins, and it’s since made a full recovery.
The Salmonier Nature Park’s 17-year-old Newfoundland pine marten is now joined by a frisky new friend.
The Salmonier Nature Park is offering its thanks to the Friends of Salmonier Nature Park who partially funded the surgery.
Conservation efforts over the last three decades have succeeded in building the once endangered animal’s population from roughly 300 breeding pairs in the 1990s to more than 2,500 animals today.
