After over a decade, the federal government has reopened the commercial northern shrimp fishery off eastern Newfoundland.
Shrimp fishing area 7 was closed back in 2015 after the stock was determined to be in poor health. However, the new stock assessment framework introduced last year has now determined that the stocks rebounded into the healthy zone.
Federal Fisheries Minister MP Joanne Thompson has announced that the 2026-2027 season will open with a Total Allowable Catch of just under 1,400 tonnes.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says it will continue to closely monitor the status of the stock.
