It’s summertime, and for some that means that the drinks – and other substances – may be flowing more than usual.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is encouraging people to look out for each other this summer, especially in situations where drugs or alcohol are involved.
The Constabulary says those substances affect decision-making and lower awareness, which may increase the risk of someone getting hurt.
They are encouraging people, whether at a party, bar, beach or other social situation, to plan ahead and have open conversations with their friends.
When out enjoying the season, police are encouraging people to stick to a buddy system and stick with people they trust, keep their phone charged and share their location with friends and family, to secure their belongings, and watch their drinks at all times.
They urge people to know their limits, and to get medical attention immediately for anyone who is ill or passes out.
As well, they say never to drive impaired, and when getting a ride people should make sure it is from someone they trust. Never accept a ride from someone driving a vehicle that is not connected to a licensed transportation service or confirmed through the use of a ride sharing app.
