People concerned about the loss of built-heritage character in The Battery will march through the Downtown Pedestrian Mall this afternoon to raise awareness of the issue.
At hand is a plan to replace the old Alderdice property (Limeville) with a residential development which includes 25 housing units.
The group “Protect the Gateway to the Battery” will form at Harbour Drive this afternoon and march through the mall to City Hall.
They have a petition going before the House of Assembly to designate Limeville as a historic site. That petition can be signed at the Battery Cafe.
Spokesperson Erin Callahan says the Alderdice property is not the only one under threat – Memorial University wishes to divest itself of two significant structures.
“We’re going to continue having community marches and gatherings because we’re also concerned about what’s going to happen with the Signal Hill campus and the GEO Centre,” says Callahan.
The march begins in the east end of downtown at 2:00.
