The federal government is increasing the total allowable catch in two fishing zones off Newfoundland.
The Atlantic mackerel stock has grown by over 50 per cent, but is still in the critical zone. The 2026 TAC goes up to 1,500 tonnes including 20 tonnes as live bait for the bluefin tuna fishery.
DFO has nearly doubled the TAC for the Atlantic herring fall fishery in the Gulf of St. Lawrence this year by more than 15,000 tonnes. That stock is now in the healthy zone.
