A cabinet minister whose district is in Labrador and whose portfolio includes indigenous affairs says she is unfairly being vilified for the cancellation of an Innu exhibit at The Rooms, and is afraid to be in her district.
The exhibit went back much further than provincial officials were comfortable with as they declined to allow such a display going back more than 300 years.
The Innu Nation cancelled the exhibit.
Lela Evans, who has numerous cabinet duties, says she is not the minister responsible for The Rooms, but is working with Premier Tony Wakeham to find a solution.
She told VOCM Open Line with guest host Darrin Bent that she’s afraid to travel home because of hostile sentiment toward her.
“This created so much animosity toward me that I was not able to go home to attend my niece’s graduation from high school, which is a big celebration,” said Minister Evans. “This is unacceptable.”
