A local seabird biologist, known nationally and internationally for his work, and ranked among the best in his field, has passed away.
Dr. Bill Montevecchi of Massachusetts came to Newfoundland in the 1970s as a professor and researcher in psychology, biology and ocean sciences at Memorial University.
He was a passionate environmentalist and conservationist and was a go-to on matters related to environmental protection.
He had been recognized with a long list of awards and recognitions for his work including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pacific Seabird Group, the Jamie Smith Memorial Mentoring Award in Ornithology, and the Local Hero Award from the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
He had been in declining health in recent months, and passed away on the weekend. He was 80.
