The health minister says “serious changes” are needed as the government struggles to keep its urgent care clinic on Stavanger Drive open.
Last weekend, a shortage of available doctors meant that services had to be provided virtually through Teledoc.
Lela Evans says the health authority has a “major” recruitment and retention problem and she went so far as to accuse NLHS of failing to respond to applicants.
“For me as the minister it is unacceptable but we do have a problem with resourcing, we do have a problem with staffing and in actual fact we do have a major problem with recruitment and retention through Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services.”
“We do hear the stories about doctors you know wanting to come to Newfoundland and Labrador and we hear about nurses applying and nurse practitioners, (where) they don’t actually even get acknowledgement of their email or their call.”
