Today marks the one-year anniversary of the start of a weeks-long disaster that the residents of the north shore of Conception Bay and the entire province won’t forget for generations to come.
Residents were already on edge this time last year following a series of suspicious fires in the region over what had been an unusually hot and dry spring and summer.
What became known as the Kingston Fire started on the morning of August 3, 2025. Fanned by high winds and fueled by tinder-dry brush, it soon spread out of control, forcing the evacuation of communities from Salmon Cove to Gull Island.

Dozens of families were left homeless by the blaze, which destroyed some 200 properties, including Cabot Academy in Western Bay.
It wasn’t until August 30th that the fire was finally declared under control, having razed some 10,000 hectares.
The police investigation continues, and RCMP are asking anyone with additional information to come forward.
The recovery and rebuilding process continues with more help on the way from the provincial government for affected homeowners.
