Volkswagen St. John’s has won its third senior women’s championship at the Royal St. John’s Regatta by a boat-length over Smith-Stockley in a time of 5:07. All-Star Rebar rounded out the top three.
It was an emotional win for Volkswagen – one of their coaches was Mike Power, who passed away last week and was laid to rest the day before the Regatta.
Nancy Beaton says Power has always been very supportive, and today was for him.
“Sometimes we wouldn’t even know but he would be up in the parking lot watching and give us tips afterward on how to improve. He definitely made us row harder today,” said Beaton.
Winds eased up for the championship from this afternoon when the committee put a pause on rowing for a short time.
Members of the championship team are: Connie Duffett, Katie Wadden, Nancy Beaton, Laura Roche and Jennie Wadden, stroke Alyssa Devereaux and coxswain Dean Hammond.

The men’s championship race put the bookends on Derby Day as Fine Strokes Plaster and Painting took the title away from Capital Home Hardware by a little over a boat-length.
James Cadigan says the win is a reminder of how important the rowing community is.
“Lots of support from families, everyone down at the lake, as a community, that’s what this is all about.” said Cadigan.
Members of the championship crew are: Chris Sweeney, Cameron Hickman, Dan Cadigan, Eric King, Brent Payne, stroke James Cadigan and coxswain Craig Whittle.
