The provicial government is becoming financially involved in the Royal St. John’s Regatta by offering an incentive for crews to strive toward winning all three such events.
There used to be a VOCM/Paint Shop Triple Crown of Rowing some years ago for a thousand dollars at the end of the rainbow, but government is offering $10,000 to any senior men’s and women’s crew who take all three rowing events: St. John’s, Placentia and Harbour Grace.
The three regattas typically happen over the course of three or four weekends, depending on weather.
Keith White, President of the Royal St. John’s Regatta, thinks it will provide even added incentive for crews.
“Two $10,000 prizes, for the female and male crews, which is incredible.” Said White, “It was unexpected, I think it will go a great way to helping us.”
