The 49 and a half annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival gets underway this weekend and this year, things will look a little different.

One notable difference is that the festival will run for one day only; tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The morning will be focused on traditional tunes and bluegrass sessions, while in the afternoon performances will feature young, up-and-coming performers. The evening, while featuring many familiar artists, will be headlined by Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne.

Speaking on Your VOCM Mornings, festival director Dave Penney outlined some of the performances.

“So Andy Jones is going to get up for fifteen minutes and do whatever Andy Jones does. That’s going to be great, for sure. He’s going to come up after De La Paz Latin Band. Dave Panting is going to be before them off to the side and then Anita Best and Pamela Morgan are before him for a half an hour. So, basically, we’re keeping things going full-on.”

Festival-goers are reminded that there will be no concessions or vendors this year (that means no beer tent) so they will have to provide their own snacks and beverages.

The festival is free to attend and donations will be accepted on-site.
