A St. John’s-based company has big plans for developing a marine port and industrial subdivision near the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula so that it can become a player in Arctic preparedness and response.

Great Northern Port Inc. says Crémaillère Harbour is ice-free for 7-8 months of the year and while it lies within the municipal boundaries of the Town of St. Anthony, it says St. Anthony Harbour is not the ideal location for servicing the “new Arctic.”

The company says as the far north opens for more commercial and domestic traffic, there will be further demand for emergency support and search and rescue.

GNP says Crémaillère Harbour Marine Port will provide the range of services such as wharfage, fueling, warehouse and lay down areas as well as maintenance and repair requirements.

The infrastructure to be built will include a large warehouse, a fuel tank farm, emergency response building, service dock and access road upgrades.

It hopes to begin work next year and finish in 2029.
