The last few weeks have proven to be much cooler and wetter than they were this time last year.

While that’s dampened the threat of forest fires, it’s been a tough go for those on vacation hoping to enjoy outdoor activities.

Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says a “complex” low pressure area has formed over the island that will continue to bring cooler, cloudy and wet weather over the coming days.

“We’ve definitely had a bit of a spell…where we’ve seen this less than ideal situation for folks who want to have a nice, more summery-type holiday.”

Neil says the summer of 2025 was warmer than normal for most of the island and much of Labrador, fueling forest fires that caused extensive destruction.

He says while Labrador has seen temperatures so far this year that are a bit warmer than normal, the same can’t be said for the island.

“In Newfoundland, we’ve actually been a bit colder than the normal for a good stretch of the island. We really looking mainly like central, north eastern as well as the northern Avalon has been colder than normal so far.”

He says temperatures should hover around normal or just below normal for the remainder of the month, with more unsettled weather expected this week and into the weekend.
