The province’s Privacy Commissioner is recommending that public bodies consider providing the name of anyone involved in snooping-related privacy breaches to affected individuals.

The recommendation comes after an employee of NL Health Services had a peek at a person’s health record.

NLHS was notified.

The Privacy Commissioner says the health authority took the appropriate steps to prevent a future breach from occurring, but is recommending that an affected person be provided with the name of the snooper involved.

The commissioner says affected people are in the best position to understand the impacts of a privacy breach on themselves, and knowing the identity of the snooper is their right.

The commissioner is also recommending that custodians develop and implement a privacy breach notification policy to address snooping specifically, and that the affected person be updated on any disciplinary action taken.
