The mayor of Labrador City says it will be a “dark day” for his community if a final deal on the Churchill Falls hydro development is not reached.
There are concerns that the deal may be scuttled before it is finalized if the Parti-Quebecois wins the upcoming Quebec provincial election.
Mayor Jordan Brown says if it falls through, it will be “the final nail in the coffin” for businesses in Labrador City.
“It will be a very dark day for Labrador West if this falls through again for a second time. Investors are going to pick up, and go find somewhere else to put their money into mining. It would degrade us as a mining region,” he told VOCM News.
“Time and time again, miners and experts always say Labrador was an A-plus place to invest and mine and all that. This would definitely sink that reputation pretty quickly. And, unfortunately, I wouldn’t put it past the PQ to cut their nose off to spite their face.”
