A group of people on the south coast who like to drag for scallops for recreational purposes are concerned over rules which they say is discriminatory – and they’re going to let DFO know in a public way.

A new condition contained in their licence prohibits the use of mechanical aids to recover the device used to drag the ocean floor.

Gerald Parrott says the condition actually prevents the vast majority of people in the group from participating in that fishery. For example, seniors and persons with a disability are unable to accomplish the task at hand.

“I just had my shoulder replaced six months ago and I can’t haul up my rake. My wife and I used to go out but there’s no way we can haul that up,” he says.

They plan on demonstrating at DFO offices in Marystown and Harbour Breton on August 31.
