Ontario Premier Doug Ford says all options are on the table and he’s willing to cut electricity exports to the United States if the trade war continues to escalate – but says he can’t go it alone.

Ford made the comments during a housing announcement in Vaughan yesterday.

“We need a Team Canada approach,” says Ford “and I’d be happy, within the provinces, to lead that approach. If this escalates, and we can’t get back to the table, and (Trump) keeps coming after us, all options are on the table in my opinion. But, I can’t do it alone, we have other provinces that sent electricity down to the U.S., we all have to be on the same page.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says we shouldn’t be jumping the gun on cutting energy exports to the United States.

Smith says cutting exports could end up hurting us more than them – including hefty tariffs on the oil Ontario and Quebec import from the Midwest.

(She says the economy in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec would come to a “grinding halt’ as a result. She says states that rely on Alberta’s heavy oil would turn to countries like Venezuela instead and would risk losing the U.S. as a customer forever.

“This would result in a loss of about half a million jobs at a minimum, mostly in Alberta, but also hundreds of thousands of jobs in Ontario and Quebec.”)
