The Marystown town council is pleased now that the contract for replacement of the Canning Bridge has been awarded.
The original bridge, which has since been replaced with a temporary structure, was closed in February of 2023 due to serious structural issues.
Trident Construction has been awarded the $23.7 million contract, with work expected to be “substantially completed by August of 2028.”
Mayor Gerry Brenton, who would like to see it built as soon as possible, is hopeful that there will be some movement in the area by the end of the year.
Brenton says before the Bailey bridge opened to one-way traffic just over a year ago, residents on either side of the bridge had to go well out of their way to access services.
“Our ambulances, our fire department, they’re all on the north side of town. So they would have had to come around, or they would have had open up and cross the old Canning Bridge under unsafe conditions.”
