The provincial government is providing Ontario-based NordSpace with $4 million to help with the development of a space port in St. Lawrence.
NordSpace made numerous attempts to get Canada’s first commercial rocket launch off the ground last year from the Burin Peninsula, but weather, fishing boats and fires hampered their efforts to compete in the “race to space.”
Funding from the province consists of a $1 million loan and a $3 million forgivable loan contingent on creating 100 jobs over seven years.
The federal and provincial governments made the announcement Thursday. It included another $1 million from Ottawa – on top of $8 million provided in March.
Government says the cash flow will drive jobs in the region and create more business on the Burin Peninsula.
Ottawa says it plans to spend nearly $2-trillion on the space business by 2040.
