The provincial government is looking at making changes to the Personal Health Information Act, but the health minister does admit that they have a “fine line to walk.”
Government is currently reviewing the act after an uproar from parents earlier in the year regarding access to children’s health information under the new CorCare system.
The issue was that parents and guardians of children 12-15 would need consent in order to access their files.
While that policy has been in place since 2011, people are concerned about its interpretation in the digital age.
Minister Joedy Wall says they want to get any changes right.
He acknowledges that there are “complex cases” involving child safety in which someone could be blocked from having access. He says that’s why the public engagement process is important, and that feedback will guide government as they prepare to bring any changes to the legislature late next month.
