NAPE has achieved what it’s calling a “historic victory” at the NL Labour Relations Board which protects the rights of casual workers.

The union says that “for years” the board excluded casual employees from collective bargaining, stating that casuals lack “a substantial connection to the workplace.”

NAPE recently filed an application to certify a unit of casual employees at Stella’s Circle, and during a hearing on the matter its lawyers argued that denying access violated workers’ constitutional rights and the spirit and intent of the Labour Relations Act.

According to the union, the board agreed with it, saying that a worker is no less of an employee because they have an irregular schedule.
