Researchers at the Marine Institute are giving the public a unique look at the evolution of a marine ecosystem located in Placentia Bay.

As part of a marine habitat restoration project, an underwater camera is being used to document how marine life moves around a concrete reef ball that was installed last year.

The camera is part of a broader effort to learn how marine life responds to a restored habitat.

Bethany Randell, a project engineer who works out of The Launch in Holyrood, says several species, including cunners, crab, lobster, and sea stars have been observed there.

A catalog of short videos of the site is being uploaded online for the public to see.

She says she’s excited to “bring the sea life to life” for people who otherwise would not be able to see it.
