Despite its own safety concerns, the Town of Conception Bay South is moving forward with a plan to rent e-bikes to residents.
The municipality and the federal government announced funding for the initiative earlier this week, which includes funding to purchase e-bikes for public use on the T’Railway.
Mayor Darrin Bent points to other urban municipalities that already rent out e-bikes, but admits he remains “very concerned” about the overall safety of e-bikes and e-scooters in the community.

“Conception Bay South is very pleased to be able to offer these urban style amenities, lockers, places for people to get outside and enjoy and e-bikes are one of them and of course the efficiency of an e-bike and so forth,” he told reporters.
“What I’ll say about regulations, of course we need regulations with them. We’re very concerned about what we’re seeing as what I would call unsafe use of e-bikes but mostly e-scooters in our community and we’re looking very forward to the province’s look into regulations and making that safer for everybody.”
Area MP Paul Connors also called for increased regulations around e-bikes and e-scooters.
