Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the weekend with strong winds expected for St. John’s, the northern portion of the Avalon, the northeast coast and Clarenville.

Winds could gust to 110 km/h and even higher in some areas. Winds exceeding 119 km/h are considered hurricane force.

Environment Canada meteorologist Allison Sheppard says the weather system will bring some rain, but the real story will be the wind.

“Many areas could see winds…up to or exceeding 100 km/h, and of course with all the trees still having all their leaves that could definitely cause some damage.”

“People who still have lots of things outside might want to consider putting that away because those winds definitely could cause some damage.”

Watch for possible flight cancellations at the airport, while Marine Atlantic is warning of the possibility of schedule changes due to the weather.
