The cast of Netflix’s new thriller BELOW may be able to act as Newfoundlanders, but can they speak like Newfoundlanders?

Gander native Alison Kelly, who was hired as the dialect coach for the show, says the difficult thing about Newfoundland accents is that it is not a well-known accent, and every region of the province is different.

BELOW takes place in a fictional rural town, and Kelly says she put together parts of different dialects from all over the island to create a sound that still fairly represented the locals.

Kelly says among other things, she specifically took the “hard ‘r’ sound that is iconic to Newfoundland;” she took the “soft ‘a’ sound, like in harbour”, as well as the St. John’s “flappy ‘t’ sound, like the way townies say ‘right’.”
