The B.C. government is filing legal action against OpenAI in connection with the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting in California court.

B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma provided the update yesterday.

Sharma says the BC government is committed to working with Ottawa to ensure the “proper regulation of AI in Canada and around the world.”

She says California is the right place to be filing the lawsuit against OpenAI which the B.C. government alleges should have informed law enforcement after flagging troubling conversations involving the shooter.

“The decision not to report, happened in California. What we’re alleging in our claim is that (Open) AI knew that there were serious things happening in that chat, and they failed to report.”

“The families who we are in contact with very closely with our lawyers, filed in California. We want to be there to support them,” she says.

They also want to “make sure that tragedies like that never happen again.”
