Green Party Leader Elizabeth May believes a recreational lobster fishery, similar to the summer food fishery for cod, could be sustainable for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

May presented a petition in Ottawa last week calling on government to create what she describes as a “conservation-based recreational lobster fishery.”

May says based on the evidence she’s seen so far, the science suggests the local population could easily support a non-commercial fishery going forward.

“There have been studies that look at the health of the lobster stock, and whether it could sustain not a commercial fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador, but a recreational fishery or basically local non-commercial family consumption,” she told The Tim Powers Show.

“It certainly looks as though the current population of lobsters is strong enough for a conservation-based fishery of that kind.”

The petition was first written by activist Kyle Mulcahey, who argues the fishery would help people during cost of living crisis.
