The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says a fin whale that had become stranded at Wild Cove near Corner Brook has died.
It appears as though the animal perished yesterday in shallow water.
Department officials say they may be able to collect tissue samples from the animal if it is safe to do so, to determine its cause of death.
Fin whales are among the largest animals in the world, second only to blue whales.
DFO says given the whale’s current location, disposal of the carcass falls within municipal or provincial jurisdiction.
