Nova Scotia and Manitoba are the latest provinces to bring in legislation which spells out age and speed limitations involving the use of e-bikes and e-scooters. That leaves Newfoundland and Labrador as one of the few jurisdictions with no laws covering the relatively new form of transportation.
You now see them everywhere – on roads, sidewalks, parking lots and trails with kids of all ages at the wheel.
Currently, there is no age restriction in Newfoundland and Labrador but neighbouring Nova Scotia is going to make it illegal for anyone under the age of 14 to be in control of one.
Dr. Gillian Sheppard, a physician at the Janeway, says there’s been an increase across the province in the number of young kids being injured, and in 15 years in the ER, she’s never seen anything that compares to the number of hospitalizations.
CBC’s Marketplace focused on the new technology a couple of weeks ago, profiling a 14-year-old boy in St. John’s who has to learn to walk and talk all over again after crash his machine.
Dr. Sheppard believes the best situation would be a ban on ridership for anyone under 16 years of age.
