Heritage NL is getting behind the call for proposals for the former west end fire hall in St. John’s.
The capital city is seeking project proposals for the historic structure, hoping that the new development may preserve the existing building. It has been closed for about five years.
It highlights Bannerman Brewery’s renovations of the east end fire hall as an example.
Heritage NL shared a classic photo of the west end station in operation in the 1960s, encouraging someone with an eye for heritage buildings to consider the property.

The City of St. John’s says points will be allocated to projects intending to apply for Heritage Designation for the building.
Craig Smith, president of the Firefighters Association, would like to see the city keep the building and use the main level as a museum. He says it’s the only building from pre-Confederation still owned by the city. The current Firefighters’ Museum is in the Central Fire Station on Parade Street but Smith says few people actually even know that it exists.
He says using the West End station would allow more residents and tourists to see part of the history of St. John’s.
