The Steelworkers Union itself is not a potential buyer of the Come By Chance refinery, but they are trying to play matchmaker and trying to find a potential buyer.
One company, Origin, is said to be interested in acquiring the refinery from the current owner, Silver Peak. The Steelworkers Union has reached out to its parent union, the International, and also to the provincial government.
The union pursued a similar course with Wabush Mines in searching for a buyer.
Union local president Glenn Nolan says the last thing they wish to see is the conversion to something less than a refinery, such as a tank farm. He says we will all pay at the end of the day whether it’s for fuel, food, electricity.
An earlier version of this story said the Steelworkers themselves were one of the groups interested in taking over the Come By Chance oil refinery, while they are not looking to take it over they are actively helping to find a potential buyer.
