Making a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign can make a big difference in the life of a veteran in need.
That’s the message the Royal Canadian Legion wants people to remember when they pin a poppy to their chest in the days leading up to Remembrance Day.
The poppy image is copyrighted in Canada, the rights of which belong to the Royal Canadian Legion. Under copyright law, permission must be granted by the Legion in order for someone to use the poppy image to collect funds of any kind.
Berkely Lawrence of Carbonear is the chair of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy and Remembrance Campaign and past president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Command.
Money collected through the annual volunteer campaign is put in the Poppy Trust Fund to help veterans. Lawrence says it can make a real difference in some people’s lives, and they’ve seen the grateful tears as a result.
It’s meant to cover emergency expenses—they’ve filled oil tanks, picked up grocery cards, and repaired roofs with the funds.
