Dozens of workers have been issued layoffs at the Beaver Brook Antimony Mine near Glenwood following a difficult year for the industry.
A company spokesperson says the majority of their workforce—which consisted of over 100 people—has been laid off, with more layoffs expected over the coming week.
The project restarted just last year with backing from Chinese investors but came to a halt in March at the onset of the pandemic.
While limited operations were launched this summer, the company decided to suspend work indefinitely this week.
The company says production costs tend to increase during the winter. With their finances feeling the impacts of a difficult year, they’ve determined that it was not feasible to continue operations for the upcoming season.
A small team will be kept on to meet their requirements, and monitor the situation in case it becomes viable to restart the project once more.
